According to security provider Radware Global Threat Analysis Report 2021-2022the number of malicious web application requests increased by 88%, more than double the annual growth rate of distributed denial of service attacks, which increased by 37%.
The most common types of web application attacks were broken access controls and injection attacks, which together accounted for more than 75% of the total.
Banking and finance, SaaS and retail were the sectors most exposed to web application attacks in 2021.
Last year, several DDoS attacks also broke records, and ransomware denial-of-service attacks became much more common. The idea is that a large number of micro-floods over a longer period causes the victim to increase infrastructure resources until their service becomes prohibitive.
The top DDoS attack sectors of 2021 were gaming, retail, government, healthcare, technology, and finance. DDoS ransom attacks against VoIP providers were of particular concern.
“Statistics tell a story of bad actors. They become smarter, more organized and more focused in pursuing their goals, whether for money, fame or a political cause,” said Pascal Geenens, Director of Threat Intelligence at Radware.
“In addition, cybercriminals are changing their attack patterns from using larger attack vectors to combining multiple vectors into more complex campaigns to mitigate. Ransomware operators and their affiliates, which now include DDoS actors for hire, work with a whole new level of professionalism and discipline – something we’ve never seen before.
